Deforestation from the 12th century to build ships in Toulon explains why the top of Mont Ventoux is so barren. Also a special place because Petrarch was already hiking up the mountain to enjoy the panorama in the 14th century, while aimless hiking only really emerged in Romanticism (late 18th-early 19th century). It seems like everyone is drawn to that peak.
Greetings from Le Mont Ventoux,
